INAUGURATION OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY (EKMA)

Following a directive by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development in pursuance to Section (3) of the Local Governanace Act, (ACT 936), for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to inaugurate their Assemblies in fulfillment of their Constitutional mandate, the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) held its inauguration on Monday, 12th February, 2024 at the Forecourt of the Assembly.

The total number of the members is twenty(20) consisting of thirteen(13) elected Assembly Members, Seven(7) Government Appointees, and two(2) Members of Parliament. The Assembly Members were sworn into office by the District Magistrate; Her Ladyship Bernice Oduro Kwarteng. The Magistrate led the Assembly Members to take the Oath of Secrecy, Offical Oath, and Oath of Allegiance.

The Electoral Commission conducted the election of the Presiding Member. At the end of the elections, the unopposed candidate in the person of Hon. Philip Evans Nyarko who doubles as the Assembly Member for Effia Electoral Area, secured 19 “Yes”votes; representing 83% and four (4) “No”votes to emerge as the Presiding Member of the Assembly.

The MCE presented the symbol of authority (PM’s Gavel) to the Presiding Member, symbolizing the transfer of power to him.

In an acceptance speech, Hon. Nyarko expressed gratitude for electing him into office and promised to work hand in hand with key stakeholders, Assembly Members and management for the development of the Assembly.
